tmj and other questions.?!

Question: Tmj and other questions.?
i have been having jaw pains for around a week. i do grind my teeth at night and now i'm noticing it more during the day while i'm up. i've been told in the past that i might have tmj. now, these past few days, i've been having this horrible headache, along with this bad jaw pain. i can't open my mouth and my jaw makes a grinding noise. anyways, tonight i have been getting really dizzy. is this caused by tmj? what should i do? i mean, i've been taking advil and icing my jaw for 2 days. i even took a vicodin for this pain (i have a slipped disk, have vicodin for that) and that only helped for about 2 hours.
should i go to the doctor?
what do you think they would suggest?
mind you, i have no health insurance, and my parents can't afford big things.
i just need to know what i should do/what to expect. and the main thing i'm worried about is how dizzy i am.

thank you.

Answers:

Of course you should see your doctor about your problem. However, if the dizziness is simple vertigo and/or dysequilibrium, it's probably because you've created an inflammation which is effecting the inner ear where you balance organs are...the vestibular system.

Inner ear problems can be very disconcerting and worrisome. They can create psychic sensations such as feelings of being disconnected and not knowing which way is up and those sensations can lead to anxiety and panic episodes. However, the good news is, they won't kill you. Just be very careful about doing balance-intensive things (such as walking down stairs or climbing up ladders) when dizzy.

You'll need to try to stop the bruxing and you may eventually have to see a dentist about a "bite guard". I got one and it cost me $550. They don't look like much but they're quite difficult to make. Also, mine was of no help at all because I don't brux in my sleep. I clench when awake.

In the mean time try treating the symptoms. I use Aleve (naproxsyn) for the inflammation and it's helps a lot with the balance issue (dizziness). I take Tylenol jaw pain and codeine for neck pain which is related to my TMJ. I also use a TENS unit (Google them) for the pain and am hooked up to one right now as I'm typing this. I also take Valium (diazapam) for the anxiety and panic attacks which have almost disappeared from the landscape of my life.

You'll probably have to spend considerable time and effort and maybe money too to create a solution to your problem. However, you should fair better than I because of your age...I'm assuming your young. I've been dealing with my TMJ for the past 25 years and though it's idiopathic, I believe it came about from clenching and grimacing while lifting heavy weights for many years.

Don't be worried about the dizziness problem. It will likely seem much worse than it is. However, you're probably fortunate to know that you brux because that is the source of your problem and you should be able to stop it with a bite guard or a night protector (head gear). If you stop the bruxing, you should stop the symptoms. That's a good thing because no one has been able to find the cause of my TMJ problems.

I'm sorry you're not insured and hope you don't find the resolution expensive. However, my experience is that there are no short cuts and it does require rather expensive medical treatment.

Good luck and good health!!

hey,

I'm a 20 year old guy who's been dealing with TMJ for a lot of my life, I want to say since I was around 8 or 9 years old due to dislocating my jaw playing hockey. Mine's definitely getting worse, and I feel like the joints of my jaw are grinding, and when it needs to pop, then I have to open my jaw wide and make it pop or it only hurts worse.

After going to the dentist, the only info I received was that surgery may not even help, but not to chew gum and to get the sleep guard as above mentioned. The sleep guard SUCKS. Definitely a pain.

From personal experience, when I used to smoke marijuana, I was completely free of the pain and clicking- sort of strange, but true for me, at least. If you're in an area where that is possible medically, maybe check into it.
