extremely painful cramp in calf muscle?!

Question: Extremely painful cramp in calf muscle?
occasionally (1-2 times a month) when lying in bed about to go to sleep i would suddenly get an extremely painful feeling in my calf muscle, usually the left one for about 30 seconds to a minute, sometimes its lasted up to 2minutes.
it literally feels like someone is ripping it apart from the inside. i have been told by my dad that it is growing pains but none of my friends ever get it. when it happens my calf goes very tense and hard.
this is why i worry of the muscles being pulled, stretched and ripped because that's what it feels like is happening.
in the opposite leg i have Osgood schlatters syndrome and only recently this week i think i am developing shin splints. basically my whole lower part of my body is screwed and it is painful as.

is there anyone elso who gets these cramps, i call it cramp but it feels extremely different to a cramp, more like rip. is there anything i can do to prevent it happening and why is it happening.

i need to work on the health of my legs because very soon i have the nationals cross country and i am worried that i wont be able to take part.

Answers:

First thing to do when you feel a cramp coming on, flex your foot. (bring toes toward upper body) This will give some immediate relief from the cramp. Some long term benefits can come from adding potassium to your diet, i.e. eating more bananas. Also, add a calcium and magnesium dietary supplement every day. They can be found in vitamin stores anywhere.
Finally, the next time you see your doctor or chiropractor, be sure and discuss the problem with him or her.

I get really bad cramp in my left leg and have it for years.
I was told believe it or not it could be stress,i suffer with migraine and it does seem to happen just before an attack.
However i did actually have it during the birth of my son and they made me stand on a cold floor,it does help but does not stop it.

you may have low potassium.make sure you drink plenty of fluids when you are running.eat bananas oranges or other fruits to get the natural potassium. there is a pill you get from your doctor called K-DUR,but try the fruits first.also take salt tablets, or Gatorade because of the sweating.if none of this works talk to your doctor.

Next time it happens get someone to lie you down and take your foot and push it upwards from you toes.and if this helps it is growing pains thanks ian

I use to have shin splints and it hurts very bad after running but mostly Athletic people get it
