Increased ear pain after using benzocaine ear drops?!

Question: Increased ear pain after using benzocaine ear drops?
Okay last Saturday I was told to go to the ER by a nurse at my doctors office( I am 23 weeks pregnant and we can have nurses paged) I was running a fever, coughing, congested, and I had pain in both ears. Well two days later I felt alot better, i was only given benzocaine ear drops at the ER and I used them once after coming home and I didn't like that they made it hard for me to hear, so I didn't use them. Tonight however my ear pain has gotten severely worse and I decided to give them another try and they made my ear pain(right) which was already severe, even more so. The entire area around the ear including some part of my cheek is numb. Is there anything I can do at home to make the pain go away until I get into my doctor tomorrow? And why would the pain get worse after taking something that should make it better?

Answers:

If the inflammation and irritation is REALLY bad, it could be affecting that group of nerves that pases right by your ear through the temporalmandibular joint.
Because you had a bad experience with the drops I would avoid putting anything in them till tomorrow.
Normally I would suggest you start ibuprofin immedeately, but you're preggers so that complicates things a bit.

Get back to your doctor and have them look in there again. It MAY just be REAAAAALLLLY bad, and you may have to put up with the pain a few times before it gets better.
I know whenever I have a realy bad ear infection, my ears are always super sensative to ANY drops. Good luck, and don't ignore this.

Because you could be having a reaction to the benzocaine --
flush your ears with saline if you have any -- or hydrogen peroxide --
You may have had irritation that made it burn - or an infection -
Good luck -

What if the problem wasn't caused by what they thought it was so the drops couldn't react with what they expected them to? could they cause pain then? Here's some other information for you. You can also have those same symptoms with tight neck muscles. They back up the wastes, mess up your internal thermostat and, as they go to the top of your head passing just inside of your ears, can press into the nerves, when tight, to cause ear pains and if the muscles are pulling into the cheek area causing problems there as well. Freeing up your neck muscles should resolve these issues for you and here's how to free them up:
Neck
Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your neck. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. When your fingers and thumb touch, about one minute, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
