I have really painful, and repetitive coughs that won't go away?!

Question: I have really painful, and repetitive coughs that won't go away?
I don't have a fever, and the only other symptom is a runny nose.

I just always have this tickle like feeling in the back of my throat, and I'll start coughing... like three or four times... then sometimes I feel like I can't cough anymore. I'll take a deep breath, lean forward, and my mouth is open... but I don't cough. Then when I finally manage to cough, its really painful. My throat hurts really bad from coughing so much...

I was coughing last night too, and ended up staying up until three a.m.

I also coughed so much I puked...

Do you have any idea what this could be? I've never really had allergies before, so I doubt it would be that. Also, do you think I should go to the doctor, or just wait it out? Because I really don't see the point of going if its just some virus...

Answers:

Next to smoking, viral infections are the most common causes of cough. These coughs usually bring up only yellow or white mucus. In contrast, coughs producing mucus that is rusty or green and looks like it contains pus are most likely to be caused by a bacterial infection. Bacterial infections require the doctor's help and antibiotics. Viral infections are not helped by antibiotics and usually run their course within several days.

Drinking large quantities of fluids also is helpful for the cough. Guaifenesin (Robitussin or Naldecon CX, for example) is available with out prescription and may help thin the mucus.

Decongestants and /or antihistamines may help if a postnasal drip is causing the cough. Otherwise, avoid drugs that contain antihistamines because they dry the secretions and make them thicker. Check with your pharmacist for more medications and treatment for coughs.

I hope this helps you. And good luck.
