My brother just had his appendix removed this week Mon he thought he may have been discharged yesterday ....?
He had severe pains in his back .. and was told to breath deeply into a tubular devise with a ball at end and keep the ball suspended with his breath strength and fill his lungs regularly ... any one had this problem after operation?

this in simple terms is known as deep breathing exercises. They are aimed at mobilising secretions that accumulate in the lungs due to immobility which may result to complications such as pneumonia.
this should not worry you in any way because it is part of the care that has to be given to him following the operation. the principle is that he use his chest muscles to take a deep breath thereby vaporising the fluids that accumulate in the chest (in simple terms)
