Question for migraine sufferers....?!

Question:

Question for migraine sufferers....?

For those of you that have been diagnosed with migraines, have they been able to pinpoint the cause or reasoning behind them? If so, what is that cause and what kind of treatment has given you the most relief?

You know jdydewing, your situation sounds exactly the same as mine. I've had them for a long time too. I've had sinus surgery thinking they could be caused by a cyst and polyps in there. Nope. I too have done pills and shots. I have an appt with my Neurologist today. I think I'm going to throw the idea of hormones out there today. My migraines have seemed to have gotten worse since I got my IUD and have to take hormones to stop the bleeding due to the IUD. The really bad thing is I had to get the IUD because of the migraines (long boring story). It seems to all be a cycle. One thing causes another causes another. I'm missing a lot of work because of them (I work at the clinic all of my doctors practice at). I do have FMLA, but I don't want to exhast it. Plus, I'm not getting paid for the days I'm not there. UGH!!!

Forgot to add....I've had CTs and MRIs also. My head/brain is fine. My doctor was cracking jokes about how perfect it is. He's a big goof. I'm thinking about going to a headache specialist at UW Madison. But, because of my answers here so far, there may not be a point in that. How frustrating.

Thanks dr.kristen. I have tried phenergan. I vomit a lot when I have a migraine. The problem with it is, I can not function when I take it. It knocks me right out. But, I do stop vomitting. I am also on Topamax, Relpax and Imitrex Injection.

Answers:

I get them & my most common trigger is my period.
I also get them with weather changes (thunderstorms or temperature changes like extreme heat - etc)
Occaisonal other triggers are lack of sleep.
Often there are multiple triggers in people that add up & then you will get a headache. So maybe one month or one week it will thunderstorm & no headache, but the next you didn't sleep well, maybe had a glass of wine & then boom! big headache...
There are several good books out there on Amazon.com I'll post links to that you should read.

I take a daily preventive- actually 2 preventives-- I use to only take one- Topamax, then I saw another specialist at Johns Hopkins & he tweaked my preventives & added Nortryptaline & that has really made a big difference. I also take 500 mg of magnesium a day, that is a good natural preventive -- good for relaxing the muscles.
I take a combo of either Relpax or Zomig, 2 Aleve & a Phenergan when I do get a migraine (Phenergan is for nausea.) I was told to take it even if I am not nauseated.... it will keep me from throwing up later.

Good Luck.
