Can this chest pain be serious ?!

Question:

Can this chest pain be serious ?

I've been running for years, as a competitive runner I have learned to ignore the aches and pains. I began having chest pains at some point during my h.s. career, I'm thinking sophomore year. It's a aching pain, not sharp but aggravating enough for me to poke at my chest sometimes when running to see if that will alleviate it. Can this be a serious issue ?

Answers:

It could potentially be serious.

Since you're in high school, you're generally at a MUCH lower risk for a heart attack... but not totally immune. Generally speaking, if you can reproduce the pain by pushing or poking at your chest, it's not usually cardiac related.

Here's an article that lists some various causes for chest pain:

If at any time you feel chest pain that's dull, amost like a pressure... often raditating to the left arm, but may also radiate to the lower jaw, neck, and back... it's important that you stop what you're doing as it could be an indication of a heart attack.

Either way, it couldn't hurt to go to a doctor to get it evaluated... possibly a stress test or echocardiogram.
