Gall Bladder Surgey?!

Question:

Gall Bladder Surgey?

Has anyone had Gall Bladder Surgery? I had an emergency operation last week. My boy friend says that his sister had it and she has a very restricted diet. My nurse told me that I don't have to restrict my diet. I don't know who's right? Has anyone had this done before?

Also do you know how long it takes to recover. It's been one week and I feel ok but everyone says I should be "on my back" for two weeks which is NOT going to happen. My doctor didn't say to do that so I don't think I should have to do it. My BF's Mom says I shouldn' be up doing anything. My doc says not to sweep, vaccum or mop so I haven't. I can't lift over 10 pounds so I don't.

To people who have had this surgery how long was your recovery? I was told to eat a bland diet. I have these questions because I was out of state when I had the surgery and my own doctor won't see me until next week!

Answers:

I work for a surgeon and I'm assuming you had this done laparoscopically. You sound like you're feeling fine. We only admit our patients for a 23 hour observation post-op; which means that they go home the next day provided they feel fine and surgery went well. Your discharge orders most likely told you to remain on a bland diet until you follow up with your surgeon/family doctor for a post-op visit after surgery. If you're feeling fine; no complications you can start back on your regular diet slowly again. The "no-heavy-lifting" thing is still a good idea. I'd stick to that regimen for a goo 4-6 weeks. Laparoscopic surgery from the outside appears minor, but gallbladder surgery on the inside is still considered major surgery, so keep that in mind. Let your body heal. But you can be up and doing things. If you feel like going out, then do so. If you want to visit with friends, go shopping; you'll be fine. Just don't carry anything heavy. Bring your boyfriend with for that. :) Listen to your own body; it's the best indicator of how you are healing and feeling. Just make sure you follow up with your own doctor!
