Bulging vein in upper leg?!

Question:

Bulging vein in upper leg?

I've recently noticed that one of the veins in my left leg has started visibly bulging through the surface of the skin. I can see the start of it at the back of my knee and trace it all the way up to the top of my leg. It doesn't cause me any pain whatsoever, it's just a bit unsightly. Is it anything to worry about? I'm a postwoman and therefore do a lot of walking and cycling (5-10miles, 6 days a week).

Answers:

It is probably the start of a varicose vein. You are particularly prone to them if you spend a lot of time on your feet.
We all have valves in our veins to stop all the blood sinking to our feet. Varicose veins happen when a valve becomes leaky and blood starts collecting beneath it and bulging. Often it can be made worse if you have high-blood pressure or 'sticky' blood.
It can be removed by minor surgery but I'm told it can be quite painful.
There are lots of herbal remedies to help with varicose veins, especially red vine leaf extract.
