Surgery anxiety gone on fOr too long and i want it to stop?!

Question: Surgery anxiety gone on fOr too long and i want it to stop?
Recently, i had developed a fear of appendicitis which got me worrying and worrying and got me nowhere. From that fear, sprug another fear of surgery after my mum told me they stuck tubes down your throat, at which point i started to freak out. Then she told me they hooked you up to an automatic breathing machine which is just horrible ( this is my worst fear as i find it creepy, icky and unnatural) and that they cut you open. For a squeamish person that i am, i had developed an anxiety. But then my mum told me this -
- you are fit and healthy
- most people dont undergo operations
- you dont feel anything as you are knocked out
- it is over and done with quickly and unlikely to go wrong.
- if i am unsure of anyrhing i have my mum who is a nurse to look to and she will give me support

But what if it does go wrong? What if i vomit and cant breathe? I have never been knocked out before and i would find it scary.
I have been down this route of anxiety before, have seen councillors about my anxiety but yet another anxiety creeps up Me and i just wanna enjoy my life. Can anybody help me? I dont know why i worry i wont feel anything. But i dont wanna talk myself into a negative statee

Answers:

I completely feel for you. When I found out I was gonna have to have my wisdom teeth out I completely flipped. I was terrified that the anesthesiologist would get the dose wrong and I'd never wake up.

First of all, if you're not definitely going into surgery any time soon, I wouldn't think about it.

Second, the way that my dad helped me handle my anxiety was that he didn't tell me until the night before my procedure. If you want, you can have one of your relatives set up a surgery date for you if you need it and give you at max a week to a day to mentally prepare. The thing is, the more you "mentally prepare" the more freaked and stressed you're gonna be, if you're anything like me. Not telling me til the night before was the best thing my dad could have done for me.

Third, I requested laughing gas (nitrous oxide) when I went in for my procedure. Laughing gas is great. You just totally stop caring that your doctor is about to hook you up to an IV and about anything else in the world, really. Haha. If you ever need surgery and I'd ask your doc about the possibility of nitrous oxide ahead of time, I would definitely look into that.
