Do doctors always do a complete blood work screen before surgery?!

Question:

Do doctors always do a complete blood work screen before surgery?

I had surgery recently for an umbilical hernia and 1 week before surgery I had to go for bloodwork. I was just wondering if they do the CBC complete blood count before surgery.

Answers:

Usually a CBC is done so there is a baseline for comparison post-operatively. However, every surgeon is different in what pre-op labs they order. Have you had your post-op appointment yet? Ask if a CBC was done while you're there, or call the office if you have already been.
