Actually giving blood is much safe than having an IV for a day or to or three. The needle for a blood transfusion is still an iv needle but is in for only a short time, you are laying with your arm extended and supported and pretty still. That deceases the chance of theIV coming out and staying in the body causing pain. The pain from this is called infiltration, where the IV fluid cont. to go into the area around the vein where there is not much room to expand.
if the needle was not in the vein, but under the skin there would be a small blockage set up. The blood would stop flowing from the IV, and they would have to re-poke you to get the needle in the vein.
