Do doctors have to inform you of extra charges?!

Question: Do doctors have to inform you of extra charges?
Do you know if doctors have to inform you of any extra fees before performing a procedure? I received a bill from doctor's office for venipuncture 6 times more than what it would have cost me in the lab. The bill arrived three months after my visit. Before I left from there they told me I didn't owe anything? I paid my balance at the time of my visit. Do you think they're scammers? What should I do?

Answers:

At the least, doctors must inform patients of the possibility of extra charges if the treatment or procedure is not a clear cut one. For example, when I had my last operation, because I was going to be under complete anesthesia, I had to sign a document stating that if the doctors find any anomalies other than what I was being operated for (for example hernia), I give them permission to correct it which may incur additional cost. I hope this helps.

Check with your insurance company to see if it was billed as medically necessary or routine and whether the provider was in or out of network on the date of service.

I work for a health insurance company.

Call "Member Services." Their phone number is on the back of your insurance card. They can help you.
Good luck! :)
