Does anyone know how to keep from getting back spasms. The kind that just happen!

Question:

Does anyone know how to keep from getting back spasms. The kind that just happend when you aren't moving?

The doctor says I get them because of stress. They happen when I'm not doing anything or times when I haven't been doing anything. I am wondering if it is a nutritional thing? Anyhow, they knock me out of commission for a week or two and are really painful. It makes it so I'm scarred to just move at all. Help.

Answers:

Low potassium can cause muscle spasms and cramps. Eat a banana or some spinach (unless you have kidney failure or you're allergic).

your doctor may (have already) prescribe(d) some muscle relaxers like flexeril or skelaxin.

Heat works well for muscle spasms -- a good heat pack is to use an old sock. Fill it with rice, sew it shut, and pop it in the microwave. I'd do like . . . a minute at a time for maybe 4 or 5 minutes. Be sure to put a towell between the sock and your back --while it may not feel hot at first, it will . . . the rice is GREAT at retaining heat, it'll work for a while, can be re-used frequently, and helps to relax the muscles.

Massages are always nice -- some fun oils like lavender or tea-tree may make it more enjoyable.

Anti-inflamatories (if you doctor didn't prescribe anything) like asprin, ibuprofen, and aleve may offer SOME comfort (although, probably not much).

Stretches like sitting with your legs apart and leaning in toward the center, then reaching your arms over and leaning sideways may also help.
