The Migraine Club is a an exclusive group all of us would rather not belong to.

The key to dealing with migraines is to find out what your triggers are, e.g., what food, drink, environment, allergen, etc., will trigger them. Most common triggers are known - anything with MSG, nitrites (wine), some cheeses, etc. will cause them. Low pressure weather systems are a killer for me, which is one reason I hate winter and thunderstorms in the summer. Air pollution and stress are other triggers; since many people are indoors during the winter, the dirtier environment (heaters, fireplace smoke, dust, etc.) and stress of not being able to go outdoors affect migraines. If you have any allergies, or are prone to sinus headaches, they can also trigger migraines.

Don't forget anything that can put a strain on your neck either, as the muscle strain can also trigger one.

There is no easy way to determine what your triggers are; it is simply a process of keeping a diary and narrowing them down until you figure them out, then avoid them if at all possible.

As far as how long they last, it depends on how you deal with them. If you don't do anything, and you keep exposing yourself to the trigger, it can go on for quite a while. Of course with weather systems there's not a lot you can do.

The standard meds have never worked for me; I've used Fiorinal w/Codeine for about 23 years now. If you don't have anything, you need to get yourself relaxed anyway you can.
