This may be gross but I just accidently ripped out my pinkie toe nail...?!

Question:

This may be gross but I just accidently ripped out my pinkie toe nail...?

I was outside in barefeet and rammed my pinkie toe into the corner of my porch. When I got inside I noticed my toe was bleeding pretty bad. I hobbled over, grabbed a clean towel and started to wipe the blood away. It hurt a little but I'm clumsy and stub my toes all the time. As I was cleaning up the blood I felt the skin on the top of my toe stretch a little and then break away. I look in the towel and low and behold my entire pinkie toe nail right there. I know very Hostel the movie, but my question is...what now? The bleeding is mostly stopped, but do I need to keep it covered and bandaged or let it air? Is it safe to use Neosporin or something like that on the open nail bed? It hurts a little (maybe a 3 on the 1-10 scale - nothing excrutiating but a lot less then I thought for having removed an attached part of anatomy) Should I be more worried about infection? Is it safe to wear my tennis shoes or should I stick with flip flops until it heals?

It's also important to note that I'm 7 months pregnant. Hence the ramming of the toe on porch steps that have always been in the same place. My center of gravity and awareness of where all of me is at one moment is somewhat compromised at the moment. I haven't seen my feet in a month while standing. I miss them. And now I miss my toenail too.

And why the H*** would anyone rip their toe nail out on purpose? Can we say hypochondriac? Man, this hurts. For any out their considering this activity to widdle away the remainder of your Saturday night, I don't recommend it. Try biting your cuticles instead.

Answers:

Clean with soap and water, then definately put an anti-bacterial formula on your area and cover with sterile bandage. Keeping this area clean is the biggest concern. Change bandage daily, keep on antibacterial cream and sterile bandages. The nail bed will grow back approximately 1/8 of an inch a month. This will take some time and it might be rough or ridges when it does grow back if you have damaged the nail bed. Trim back and skin or nail that can catch socks, stockings etc to prevent it from being pulled open again. File down area with clean file once the area has healed over. Keep checking the area for redness, pain, buring sensations to prevent infections. When in doubt check it out. You will see some brusing around the area and it will be visible for some time until the nail grown out. I have felt your pain sorry it happened. I wore my closed toe shoes that had some more space because I needed to make sure I didn't hit it again on any thing or have someone bump into or step on it! Flip flops later after the pain subsides and "airing" out. OTC for pain and inflamation, but always check with your medical providers to make sure it is appropriate for you and make sure it has no interactions with other medical conditions and or prescriptions you are taking.
