Broken elbow - ulna? radius? recovery time? suggestions?!

Question:

Broken elbow - ulna? radius? recovery time? suggestions?

A few questions for those with some medical knowledge or experience of the same.
I fell backwards and came down heavily on my elbow.
Was in some pain and didn't take in everything that I was being told at A&E.

I've broken the head off either my ulna or radius - both were mentioned but I guess only one has a head?

I have it strapped up and in a sling with an appointment at the fracture clinic in two weeks time - assuming no complications what is the normal recovery time? How long before I can drive again and how long until full use?

IF I need an op to get it pinned, same questions.

This happened on Tuesday afternoon. I still can't straighten my arm although the swelling has gone down a little.
There is now also extensive bruising from my elbow right up to my shoulder although all the pain is confined to the elbow and lower arm - is this normal?

I did ask when I was at A&E but got confused with all the info and pain etc.

Thanks in advance

In response to answer 2 - Yes it was xrayed and yes it is broken. It's not the bone in the lower arm but the head of either the ulna or radius in the elbow, (whichever has a head.)

Answers:

The radius has a head that fits into a groove in the ulna...the head is round and it allows you to turn your wrist and palm (known as pronation and supination). This injury will take 6-8 weeks to heal, you will need extensive rehab to gain back the motion in your elbow after the bone has healed. The time frame is similar if you need surgery. Rehab time is from 2-4 months to gain back as much motion and strength as you can.
