All my life, and most of my family has excessive wax build up in our ears. (Yuck!). I've been using a store bought product that you put a few drops in your ears, wait, then rinse it out and it works great. Your ear is cleared, and you just have to wipe your ear out.
Moving on I'm a White Water Kyacker who paddles in many rivers, some of these are not the cleanest of rivers. About a week after Kyacking I was on a trip to Toronto Canada, and on the last day I started to experience this ear ache.
It was very annoying, I couldn't sleep nor put any pressure of my head on a pillow on that side. A few days later it got better while I was at the beach. About a week later on the last day at the beach, it started again. I could not hear alot.
It was a weekend, so today I went to urgent care and he took samples. After he took samples, I could not hear at all. 5 Hours and a shower later I still cannot hear at all. I have a mild throat ache.
He prescribed me neopolymyxin ear drops and cipro

It sounds like you've either got an external or middle ear infection. Just follow your doctor's orders and take your whole course of medication. I'm sure its not wax because if that were the case he would have removed it and you would be hearing better.
