Why would a broken finger need a cast instead of splint?!
Question:
Why would a broken finger need a cast instead of splint?
My daughter broker her finger... at the ER they said it was a hairline fracture.. they have a temp cast on her fingers up to her elbow.. she gets the other cast put on Monday.. why do some broken fingers require only a finger splint and others require casting of the fingers, hand and arm?
Answers:
Usually on broken fingers they will do whats called a double fitment. They will use a finger splint to stabilize the finger through the hand and double it with a short fiber glass cast from mid-hand to 3/4 for arm for stabilizing the muscles that make the fingers react. Now that on legit broken fingers though. On hairline fracture they should only put on a finger splint wrapped with a ace bandage from mid-hand to wrist.
