How long is the process of tonsillectomy (when they cut out your tonsils)?!

Question: How long is the process of tonsillectomy (when they cut out your tonsils)?
I will be going home for spring break (just one week) in two weeks and really want to get this done during spring break so my parents can take care of me and so I don't have to wait until summer. Can I just go to the doctor on Monday and then set an appointment for later on in the week or does this process take more than a week to plan out?

Thanks.

Answers:

i'm sure the schedule would be full already for the next few weeks and typically they make you wait 3 weeks after confirming you're going to have the surgery cuz you need to have certain blood tests done and need to go to your general dr to get checked out to make sure you are healthy enough to have the surgery. you also can't have ibuprofen (motrin/advil) for 3 weeks prior to the surgery so that would be another reason why you can't get it done right away.

plus it takes 10 days to recover from a tonsillectomy and you cannot go back to school/work until you have your 10 day post op check up and the dr tells you you're allow to go back to school/work.

if you really wanted it done during spring break you should have seen an ENT over xmas/new years break and you could have had it all set and scheduled.

what i would recommend is make an appointment for when you're home for spring break and get the surgery scheduled for as soon as you are out of school for the summer.

i'm 24 and i had my tonsils out in 2009.

You probably need to see the dr first. If he is gonna take them out his office will schedule it.

Well theres the Drs schedule, theres the hospitals surgical schedule, and the anesthesiologist 's schedule. So yes it possibly could take a few days or more. Oh yeah almost forgot, there is your
insurance company' they have to approve it.

Lets say it gets done when you want it to. Healing takes more then a few days. It can take 2-3 weeks, before you feel better.

well if you go to the doctor and they say you need them out you call the doctors scheduling nurse to set up the date. then it just depends on how busy your doctor is and when his nearest opening is. it could be anywhere from a week to months.
