I have tendonitis in my right shoulder, as decided by my doctor.?!

Question:

I have tendonitis in my right shoulder, as decided by my doctor.?

It is usually bothersome, but not painful. It really only hurts when I jog. Obviously I have stopped jogging, but I would very much like to get back into it. I've done physical therapy for several weeks, which seemed to help a little, but not when I would try jogging again. I have worked on the way I run (apparently I was rolling my shoulders forward in an unnatural, painful way). That helps for only a short period as well. I take ibuprofen when I know I'm going to be active, which helps alleviate some of he pain. I'm not looking to get surgery, as I would be off work far too long. Does anybody have any suggestions (besides seeing my doctor again, which I will be doing eventually!)?

Thanks you two. About the cortisone shot....how effective is it and how long is it effective for? How many shots have you had?

Answers:

First, know that tendonous injuries can take a long time to heal...several months to a year. This is due to its poor blood supply. Yet, after a few months, one would expect you to be feeling a little better.

My question would be: is there something besides your posture that could be irritating your shoulder? You'd have to have REALLY bad posture to have tendonitis purely from running. Since you do not internally rotate your arm or raise is above shoulder level, there is little to cause significant strain on the tendons. You'd be more likely to be experiencing neck or back pain at this point. The first thing I'd look into is having a simple x-ray of the shoulder to rule out subacromial bone spurring. These bone spurs can act like little hooks or teeth on the tendons. This would exaggerate the effects of poor posture, making even slight changes in posture a potential danger to the tendons.

I'd also make sure you got a thorough evaluation on the neck to make sure this is not the origin of your problem.

At this point, Ibuprofen will only cover up the problem until you have some real answers.
