Somehow or other you have probably given or gotten a jolt to the head resembling whiplash. Your cervical spine is misaligned and that in turn puts a strain on the tendons and muscles supporting your head. Perhaps you are carrying around a child that is gaining weight.
Find a reputable chiropractor that will x-ray first to determine how badly out of whack your spine is before any manipulation is done. Relax and let her/him work magic! You will need more that one visit and you will probably be told to apply a warm compress to your neck to help keep the muscles from tensing up.
Six weeks is a long time to bear this pain.
Best wishes.
Hit by a car one winter day and walked around in pain for months until I went to a chiropractor. One adjustment and the headaches went away, my back stopped hurting, and I didn't need the muscle relaxants any more!
Six weeks of neck pain is really long. I think it would be best to consult a health care professional for proper treatment and medication. It looks like its a pinched nerve it is not just a stiff neck. A pinched nerve occurs when a nerve is injured or compressed.
When sleeping try to use a neck pillow to support your neck and head from moving to another sleeping position. You may also use a posture brace to reduce the pain from your neck.

Don’t you try to warm your neck with small warm towel. It is very good for muscular pains. For best result meet a doctor.
Bad posture is not good for such a situation. It may be your seating posture. You have to identify your poor posture while you sitting on a chair. If you are a mother who spend a lot of time in front of a computer, it cause for many pains.
vary your activities throughout the day. Proper sitting posture will solve your problems.

I know that it says you have tried a different pillow, just want to make sure that you have tried the appropriate density pillow. If you are a back sleeper you need a medium density pillow, a side sleeper then you need a firm pillow, and a stomach/face sleeper you will need a soft density pillow.
maybe you should try this out?
