Does Barium milk shake for a CT scan give you the "runs"?!

Question:

Does Barium milk shake for a CT scan give you the "runs"?

I have a CT scan tomorrow and am drinking this so-called barium milk shake. I was planning on going to get the oil change done on my car after I was done with the CT scan but wondered if the drink would give me the runs and maybe I need to stay home instead. Sorry to be gross.......

Answers:

Ah, I can truly answer this question as I work in a CT department at a local hospital. What you are drinking contains barium sulfate which is contrast that does not contain Iodine. We use a product called Redicat. The iodine containing contrast is called Gastroview. Now if you are drinking the barium sulfate contrast you should not have any complications after the study unless your prior symptoms include diarrhea. You should be absolutely fine to go get your car an oil change after the scan. You're probably getting your Abd/Pelvis scanned with IV and Oral Contrast. The test takes less than 10 mins. You will though eventually have to evacuate your bladder but that's nothing new. Hope this helps.
