Some tactics would be tell the patient, make sure patient understands the info and the rationale behind it, remove water pitchers from the room, put a sign on the patient's door r.e. NPO status, pass on info in shift report, etc. The nurse could scan the bedside table to make sure there are no tempting packages of foods or snacks left laying around, and if there are, to inform the patient that these items should be put away before the surgery. Visitors to the patient should also be instructed not to provide food and drink.
