Work taking away my lunch break to leave early to give blood?!

Question: Work taking away my lunch break to leave early to give blood?
I have currently give blood while working for the same company but at a diffferent location where i now work is over an hours drive away from home. Previously my appointment cut into work time and it wasnt a problem i was allowed a lunch and to leave early. This branch says that because i dont actually need to give blood i have to give up my lunch hour beacuse i need to leave early. I havent purposly booked to get out of work i booked the latest appointment but still can.t get to it with out leaveing at 4.30 when i finish at 5. Do they have the right to do this??

well either that or you give up an hour of vacation time. It's nice you want to give blood but because of your longer commute its not reasonable for your work to loss you as a worker for an hour just to donate blood. Either give an hour of vacation time, give up your lunch or dont give blood. I see those as your only 3 viable options

yes ,,they can deduct one hours pay ,you can take one hours holiday or skip your lunch break but !!!,there is actually more they can do if they want they could actually stop you going ,it's all to do with insurance whilst at work ,if anything happens to you during your lunch break you are still insured as long as you are in a reasonable place for e.g. the cafe around the corner and lets say you slip and break your arm etc etc then still covered but car accident on the way to give blood big question mark !!there is more than you think involved here ;)

not very helpful - some management jobsworth no doubt. Not enough people give blood, although having said that I can't get an appointment anywhere near me so I've had to give up for now.

all I can think of is try to get an appointment nearer where you are. Or failing that you'll have to be charitable and lose your lunch break just once.

if this management person ever has someone close to them needing blood they might think differently.

they do have a right to take 30 mins off your lunch but not a full hour (unless your gone a full hour) because you have a choice to give blood its up to you when you give it the only time work will give you extra time off work is for doctor or dental etc and even then its only two hrs and you must give prior notice the only other way is for them to take it of your annual leave i would tell them if there taking a full lunch hr off you then you are leaving at 4

Giving blood is not a necessity and the company are in it's right to do so. You would cost the company money not a lot but they are perfectly in there legal right to do so as we give blood to help but it not a necessity.

yes they do, lets hope they don't need any blood in the future, speak to blood bank ask if they have out of office hours available as would be daft not to have, they may get more donors.

They can't take your whole lunch break if you are only leaving half an hour early so tell them you will be having only half an hour lunch and will be leaving half an hour early. And of course they can say you have to give blood in your own time.

Of course they have the right.

It's your choice to give blood.
