safe to sleep in the basement?!

Question: Safe to sleep in the basement?
My teenagers like to sleep in the basement. Is the only concern carbon monoxide and an exit in case of fire? If I have a carbon monoxide detector and they have a way out is it ok to let them sleep there?

Most building codes demand that basements used for sleeping have a door or an egress window to the outside.

Carbon monoxide is also of concern.
Yet the most common problems with basements are moisture related.

I am assuming your basement is waterproofed, yet waterproofing alone might not control dampness from condensation.

Get an inexpensive hygrometer and check you basement's moisture levels. If you get readings at or above 60%, it is not a good idea to let your children sleep there, without installing a good dehumidifier.

When relative humidity levels are that high, mold is likely to develop. Even non-toxic mold species release spores in the air, which are known to trigger allergy symptoms in many people.
Actually, they are the second leading cause of indoor allergies.

Temperature control also becomes an issue in damp basements, because humid air is much harder to cool and heat.

Sure but make sure there are no bare wires etc hanging down or fluids in the open such as paint products since kids can be mischief at times. If its a nice dry no mold basement it would make an excellent place.
