Question: Pain killers causing constipation?
Hi

Im really worried about my dad, he's in a lot of pain with his hip

He's been the doctors and the doctor sent him for x-rays

He told the doctor that hes in A lot of pain and the doctor prescribed him some pain killers but he wont take them because it makes him extremely constipated

What other pain relief is there available that doesn't have to be swallowed

Thanks

Answers:

Unfortunately, most of the effective pain relievers do cause constipation with long term use. I know your question is what other pain relievers are available, but maybe relieving the constipation so that he can take the medication would be a better route. Along with increasing his fluid intake and fiber, there are some gentle laxatives that can help without causing discomfort if he is willing to do that.

I don't know if it is available to you in the UK, but there is one available here in the US that is very gentle, brand name Miralax ( generic is Polyethylene glycol) that works very well without the harsh side effects. It is a powder and it dissolves completely in beverages - tea, coffee, juice work great - and it doesn't make them all thick and gritty, is tasteless and it is safe for long term use. It is what my doctor recommends.

You asked what other pain meds available that he doesn't have to swallow but, let me make a suggestion. He could take a gentle stool softener (Colace, etc) while he's taking pain meds.

There are pain meds that are give through IV, shots, patches & suppositories. It is going to be up to his doctor if, they will allow him any of these.
