Colonoscopy?!

Question:

Colonoscopy?

What should i expect during the procedure and can i take pain meds before?

Answers:

No, do not take any pain meds before the procedure, especially NSAIDS (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) or aspirin, as they tend to thin the blood. If any polyps are removed or if a biopsy is done, taking over-the-counter pain meds could cause you to bleed excessively. The gastroenterologist should have given you some paper work ahead of time explaining the procedure, the do's and don'ts, how to prepare, what to do afterward, etc. Contact the doctor's office and ask about this information. Each doctor is very specific in how they want you to prepare. They have you take specific medications to cleanse your colon at specific times. I had to take a double-dose of Dulcolax 2 nights before, then a liquid diet the day before, then the evening before I had to drink 2 rounds of phospho-soda. That will clean you out until you are clear. I had a general anesthesia with my colonoscopy because I have problems with muscle spasms. Typically, you are given two meds via IV -- one is a pain med and the other is an amnesiac (makes you forget). Afterward, you must be very careful in beginning to eat again. Start out with small amounts of mild food. I was stupid and ate an omelette and couldn't keep it down.

Good luck and try not to worry so much. Remember to get the information from the doctor's office. That is very important!!!
