When to take out stitches?!

Question:

When to take out stitches?

I cut my ring and pinky finger when opening a can. I had to go to ER and get 7 stitches in one and 8 in the other. They put dissolvable stitches in... that was almost 3 weeks ago and they are still there. I can not extend my pinky completely.. think that is because i cut it about to the bone? Think I can take these stitches out? think it will help? My pinky still hurts and is numb too (like it is a sleep... nerve damage no doubt)
Thanks.

Answers:

Call the ER and ask one of the nurses how long the stitches are supposed to be in. I don't think it would be wise to take stitches out without some consultation. Most importantly, you need to be moving your fingers actively and passively (with your other hand) to get that range of motion back. You can be completely functional without full sensation, but start moving your fingers ASAP!
