Questions about Coma...help please?!

Question: Questions about Coma...help please?
Almost a week ago my friend who I really love, but he doesn't know it yet, was hit by a car. He's in a Coma and I want to know from people who have experience or at least have some sort of expert knowledge on Comas...
Is he in any pain?
How can I help him to wake up sooner?
Are there any long lasting effects after having been in a coma apart from the injuries sustained by the car?
I know I could ask these to a Doctor but it's just easier asking strangers I can't see and can't see me.
Please help me.

It's so hard...

Thank you.

People who have suffered multiple traumatic injuries like your friend can be in a coma as a direct result of their injuries but are sometimes put into a medically induced coma to allow their body to heal. In this case because you ask how you can help him to wake up sooner, it is clear that his coma is not medicinally induced.
It is most important for you to know that your friend can hear what is going on around him, so talking to him is important. Let him know you're there and encourage him- tell him he's doing okay and that he has the support of his friends and family. Keeping his spirits up is important. Tell him where he is and what has happened but that he will be alright.
With anyone in a coma who has suffered traumatic injuries, doctors are careful to provide pain management. They are able to monitor his vital signs to determine the need to adjust his medications.
As for long term effects of a coma, it is completely dependent on the patient. There are patients who awaken completely unchanged.
I hope your friend does well.

Is he in pain? Could be but if the Dr. felt he had the type of injury that causes pain he would issue medication to deal with it.
Help him by holding his hand, talking to him and make sure there is always a tv or radio on tuned to something he would like to listen to. Depending on your relationship sexual stimulation has been shown in studies to stimulate the cerebellum and brain stem helping the patient come around.
Long lasting effect vary. It depends on how long he is in the coma and the original reason for the coma.

Coma's are hard things to deal with, My friend was in a coma, luckily she recovered. While she was in the coma she was tested for brain activity, and there was still some so I spoke to her family and persuaded them not to turn off the life support. If you want to try and help, When you go and visit her, sometimes doing things that she remembers will help, just talk to her, because if she is not brain-dead then she is STILL alive. Coma's are long things to recover from but my friend is still here right now.
hope he gets better soon x

it doesn't hurt to be in a coma.
depending on severe it is right now, he may be able to hear you, although it would be like being in a dream.
I'm sure he will have therapy working with him, even while he's in the ICU.
you can hold his hand, tell him about your day & the. weather, and any other things that encourage him.
give him time.

you should go to doctors immediately.

No he is probably not in any pain while being in a coma, its like being in a very deep sleep. The way you can help him is to be there for him, talk to him as if he was awake and alert and let him know you are there, do things (music, movies etc) around him that he likes and would respond to normally. There can be lasting effects from a coma, it depends on the injury. Some people with extreme head injuries unfortunately don't wake up but many do wake up. Some people will have issues after waking and will have to go through therapy to be re-taught how to do things. It all depends on the injury and the degree of the injury.

Stay by his side, play his favorite movies and music, talk to him, tell him things he'd want to hear and make sure hes surrounded by friends and family who tell him they love him all the time. My thoughts are with you and him!
