Knee injury from running?!

Question:

Knee injury from running?

I have never run before really and just started last night with a group. I warmed up a bit but maybe not enough cause after a couple of laps my knee just went and now I can't even walk on it. I elevated it last night with ice but it has done squat. I'm in agony when I either move it when sitting down or especially walking on it. It doesn't seem to be swolen. Any advice?

Answers:

It depends on what sort of injury you're suffering from. You didn't go into specifics on what caused you to go down. I, personally, suffered from a dislocated knee. When something like that happens, you never fully recover. My knee still sounds like crinkling paper when I move it. However, the best thing to do is go easy on it well after it's healed. Give it a good year before you try to do anything serious with it, because your tendons and ligaments could still be damaged and weak. After that, start small and work up your leg strength by doing squats or leg presses. The reason you injured yourself was possibly because of your lack of any major previous physical activity. You probably lacked the muscle strength to keep your knee properly in place. If you really want to exercise in the meantime, I would suggest low impact activities like swimming or pilaties.
