Question:

Is it true that Asprin or Bayer can lower blood pressure?

I heard stories and even seen the commercials about Bayer stopping heart attacks. I was wondering if that was true because I have high blood presure and at risk forhypertension and I am thinking about taking one asprin or one bayer every two days until my blood pressure lowers. I appreaciate any answer you can give me. Thank you.

Answers:

Aspirin does not lower blood pressure; it is not an anti hypertensive. It does however help prevent heart attack and stroke but not by decreasing blood pressure. Aspirin prevents platelets in your blood from sticking to each other ( sticky platelets are common in diabetes one reason diabetics have such high rate of heart disease) If groups of platelets gather in your vessel wall overtime the vessels do not get enough blood flow leading to a heart attack or stroke. Aspirin makes it harder for the platelets to stick together .Not everyone should take aspirin therapy as it puts you at an increased risk of bleeding (including bleeding in the brain) and ulcers. The best thing to do would be to see your doctor. Your pre hypertension may be able to be managed through diet and working out, if not your MD can try different medications to see which one is best for you. You should not just start aspirin on your own without knowing if you have bleeding issues.
