My throat has been quite weird lately. Anyone know why?!

Question: My throat has been quite weird lately. Anyone know why?
Okay, recently, I have gotten over a long cold with my throat. I felt congested and mucus would always come up and I'd have to spit it out. About 2 weeks ago, my throat was fine, I unfortunately still have mucus and still do to this day, but it was fine. It sounded great. Now, on the other hand, my throat is bad. It sounds cracky and scratchy again and I don't understand why. Especially with my singing. It sounds horrible now. Any ideas why? DONT SAY PUBERTY. Im a girl. Also, any advice on how to improve it?

Answers:

If you sing, I hope you have a voice teacher as they can be excellent resources on how to keep your voice (vocal folds) healthy and sounding good.

Try to keep hydrated, as well as possible. There is ALWAYS mucus in your throat (I'm talking about when you are healthy and assuming you aren't sick now). If you feel like when you sing that mucus is in the way, it usually means that you are not hydrated enough and that the mucus is thick.

You can also be developing allergies to something in the air. You won't feel the post-nasal drip when that happens, but that can irritate your vocal folds and make your voice sound scratchy. Taking Claritin or another antihistamine may or may not help, because it'll also dry you up. I hope you'll find a better solution.

You also are getting over a cold, so that can be complicating things (same reason for the scratchiness as an allergy attack).

To help, drink fluids, 30 min to an hour before you sing. Warm up exercises, I was taught to sing very low (not even notes, like your voice is just vibrating) to shake off that stuff.

Give it some time, be patient. If it doesn't improve after a long time, see a doctor.

Good luck.
