First of all, don't drink through a straw-that can cause more bleeding. As for caring for it, rinse your mouth with REGULAR Listerine or the store-brand equivilant after anything you eat as well as when you wake up and before you go to bed. After a few days, the swelling wilI do go down and you'll be able to eat anything. I don't suggest eating anything with citric acid or drinking anything carbonated for the first week or two a it may irritate it.

You may want to stick to soft items like bread and ice cream if your tongue is really sensitive after the piercing. Abstain from hot items, like coffee, as the metal post of the ring will absorb the heat. Also abstain from acidic items, like ketchup, and high sodium items, like processed meat products, as they will cause a burning sensation at the piercing site. Foods like spaghetti and cheese pizza can potentially wrap around the post of the ring and pull it, so be careful while eating them.

You will need to clean your tongue piercing after each meal, no more than three times a day. Avoid obsessive cleaning, as it can cause an oral yeast infection. First, wash your hands to avoid the transfer of germs from them into your mouth. Either use hot, soapy water or hand sanitizer. Next, brush your teeth like normal with a soft bristled toothbrush and regular toothpaste. The toothpaste should not have any special "scrubbers" in it, as it can cause irritation and/or the growth of a keloid. Use the toothbrush to clean as much of the post as you can and also clean the top and bottom ball. Rinse first with water, and follow with a non-alcoholic mouth wash.
