Question:

Does a chronic "stiff neck" that radiates to the shoulders indicate any health problems?

I've had this problem for six months and am starting to think it is something other than tense muscles.

Answers:

In the absence of fever or lymph node swelling, usually "stiff neck" and pain indicates an alignment problem. Chiropractic is an excellent start for correction but adjustments alone will not solve the problem.

Find a good Yoga or Pilates instructor who will help you get started in appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises. Pilates is my preference because of the core strengthening but both work toward balancing strength and length of the left and the right sides of the body.

Posture is also extremely important. Are you sitting crooked? Do you read in bed. That can cause poor neck alignment. How is your driving posture?

And what is your stress level? We carry our woes on our shoulders. Is there something in your life you are not dealing with, something that is a "pain in the neck"? Massage might help in this area but dealing with the problems will work with the cause.
