Question: My ankle is swollen and it is really painful ?
I was playing football today and went in for a tackle and went over on my ankle. At first it didn't seem that bad but by the evening it has swollen up massively and I am in a lot of pain what should I do??

Answers:

It will be quite painful, but it is a good sign if you can put some of your weight on it. For an ankle sprain, the treatment is as laid out below, and you can do the majority of this for yourself, especially as the early use of these approaches minimises pain and swelling. However, if you have a bad sprain, or suspect that you might have a more serious injury (such as a broken bone) you should seek advice from your doctor or the local accident and emergency department.

What you need to do to heal your ankle, is to wrap it in a bandage. It will not put as much pressure on it, so it can heal. Swelling is normal especially when you twist an ankle. However, if it is really to a point where you can't walk on it at all, or if it really is swollen, you might need to see a doctor. The doctor will probably make you wear a cast, and give you crutches for at least two weeks.

If you have a sprained ankle, you can often deal with it yourself, but if in any doubt about whether it may be anything else, or about the severity of the symptoms, you should seek professional help. The standard treatment for sprains is often abbreviated as "RICE", that is:
Rest
Ice (cold compresses). Try using a bag of frozen peas, or crushed ice in a plastic bag, wrapped in a damp cloth (this helps to avoid ice burns). Do not apply for more than a few minutes at a time.
Compression. For example using a crepe bandage or tubular bandage.
Elevation. Have your leg up on the sofa or a stool, but make sure you do not have a hard edge pressing on your calf muscle (to help to reduce the risk of a Deep Vein Thrombosis / DVT).

good luck & hope it helped.. & hope you get better soon.. ;))

Keep a cold or hot compress on it. Take some pain killers and keep your foot rested on something e.g a foot rest.
When you go to sleep rest it on a pillow and tomorrow if it is the same or worse got to the hospital or doctors.

The best thing is rest. Your ankle will not heal without rest. Ice will help the swelling go down and will help to relieve some pain. If you have an ace bandage you can wrap it around your ankle to help support it.
