How can I make my broken hand heal faster?!

Question:

How can I make my broken hand heal faster?

I broke my 5th metacarpal (bone in hand below pinkey) pretty badly when I punched what turned out to be a cement reinforced wall. The bone basically snapped up and was poking up under my skin (think: hold a twig in both hands and snap it)...I had to push it back down, hurt lots.

So anyway it's in a temporary cast now and I'll probly get it off tomorrow when i go to the hand specialist and get a new one. I'm just wondering what I can do, besides ice, levitate and not use it, to make it heal faster. Any supplements or dietary changes I should take? Or any other holistic methods? Help would be appreciated as I can no longer ride my bike, go to the gym or go swimming this summer until it heals. =( =( =(

I never smoke cigs (disgusting) but I do smoke chronic occasionally...you think that would slow or speed up healing?

Answers:

Ugh...a Boxer's Fracture is no fun.

Using ice won't make the bone heal any faster...it will just help with the pain. If you aren't having any throbbing in the area of the break, I would suggest trying NOT to levitate it as much as possible. By raising it above the level of your heart, you are actually DECREASING blood flow to the area.

There's really no way to speed up bone repair. My only suggestion would be to take a daily calcium supplement, and take care with that hand (even if you have a cast or brace on).

No more punching walls, okay?? :) Get well soon.
