Question: Help on homework question please anyone?
A patient comes in to the hospital complaining of not feeling well. The patient has had what they think is a stomach virus for a couple of days, and has vomited everything they have tried to eat. The patient seems extremely nervous and is experiencing muscle tetany. Vital signs include the following:
Respiration rate: 4 (normal is 12-16)
Body Temperature: 99.0 F
Arterial blood gases are ordered. They show a blood pH of 7.5, a pCO2 of 49 mm Hg (normal is 35-45), and an HCO3- of 30 mEq/L (normal is 22-26).
Why is respiration rate significantly slower than normal?
