What could be wrong with my knuckles?!

Question:

What could be wrong with my knuckles?

On both my middle knuckles I seem to have a problem that won't heal itself. The tendons(not positive if that's what they are) running down the back of my hand and over the knuckles seem to be knocked out of place. This happened punching various objects, but I won't get into all that. Anyway it's left my two middle knuckles both feeling quite sensitive if I hit them off anything and they don't seem to be getting better. The tendon runs along then(if stretching out my hand) veers off toward the index finger, but I can still see the whole thing stretching over the knuckle. I don't know if I've knocked something out of place or what. The part that veers off doesn't just continue on either I lose track of it about a width of a knuckle off course. I'm hoping I don't need surgery or anything but any help on here would be nice.

Answers:

Not to get technical, but you probably ruptured your sagittal bands, which are structures that keep your tendons centralized on each finger. The sagittal bands attach to both sides of your extensor tendons around the "first" knuckle (what we call the MCP joint). It's hard for me to say for sure based on your description (without examining you).

If you are young or if you are a laborer, I would strongly consider surgery to fix this problem. If this causes you pain, I would also consider surgery. Some of it depends on how old your original injuries are. Good luck.
