How is Doctor Shopping for Suboxone Possible?!

Question: How is Doctor Shopping for Suboxone Possible?
Hi. I've got a very close friend. He is more like a brother. We have went to high school together, were in the military together and now, well, we go to the same Suboxone Doctors. However, I was disturbed to discover that he is ALSO going to another Suboxone Doctor in a neighboring state! How in the world is this possible, when Suboxone Doctors are supposed to be ethically bound to see that this sort of thing does not take place! I am not blaming them, but I sure as heck am not going to turn my buddy in...although I am worried about him and have gotten into a few heated disagreements with him about this. Can anyone help me with this??? Thanks!

Suboxone is used for opiate addiction. However it can also be addictive if taken improperly. If your friend is going to a doctor in another state and is getting his medications from different places then the doctors will not know that he is 'doctor hopping'. He has a serious addiction and while I probably wouldn't want to turn him in I would tell a family member about it. It sounds like you've already tried talking to him and he probably said he doesn't have a problem. Am I right? Well, he does have a problem. Intervention is needed. Is he close to any of his family like his mother or father? If he is I would have a talk with one of them, when he isn't there, and tell them what you know. He needs to be in a Drug Rehab program where he can be monitored 24 hours a day. He will probably hate you for a while but once he is over his addiction he will realize you had his best intentions at heart. Tell someone so he can get the help he needs.

I'm an RN.

As you have been told, it IS hard to OD on suboxone...but not impossible. The physician has no way of knowing he is getting it from somewhere else. Your friend is an addict so of course he will rationalize it. Your greatest act of friendship WOULD be to 'turn him in'. He needs help.

You know your close friend better than anybody else.

Simply, speak to him and he will convince you that there was a genuine reason why he approached someone else.

Do not leave any doubt about this issue and join into your ever lasting friendship once again.

Fortunately, Suboxone is not a real easy drug to over dose on , as your Dr. would probably tell you if, you asked. If , he's paying cash thats what's probably making it possible to get away with this double dipping in Sub clinics. He probably signed a contract(maybe 2 contracts)stating that he would abide by the programs rules and not seek or take any other opioids or opioid replacements. If & when he does get caught , he'll probably get thrown out of treatment. The withdrawls from Subs are wicked. You're a good friend to try to help him realize that hes making a big mistake. Since, there's a ceiling with Subs , it doesn't do any good to take 4 at a time instead of just 1 , 8mg pill.
