Taking care of stiches on my 3 year old?!

Question:

Taking care of stiches on my 3 year old?

My 3 year old got bittten by a dog 2 days ago. She has almost 35 stiches. They told me at the hospital that the stiches underneath will dissolve and the stiches on top will just fall out on their own. She told me it was okay to just keep a little piece of guaze on top to prevent her from getting it infected ot touching it. I bought some soft cloth tape and it is irritating her skin. There is a red mark where the tape was. I want it to heal properly and let it get some air, but I also want to keep it clean and not let anything bother it. It is terribly swollen today. What kind of tape can I use?

The doctor has her on antibiotics for infection.

Answers:

The adhesive used in some tapes are very irritating to the skin. You can place a light dressing over the stitches, and wrap a gauze "roll" wide enough to cover the area, and tape it place, avoiding any skin contact. Or use a "paper tape" to the skin. For the swelling you can apply a cold pack to the area, and keep it elevated to reduce swelling. Please follow your going home instructions or call your MD if the swelling, redness and pain increase. I hope your little one makes a complete recovery.Take care. SW RNP
