They protect the ends of the fingers and toes from friction and erosion that they would experience were they not there. Nails are also an evolutionary feature that humans have as a tool for things such as breaking into food.

I THINK: It's because if we didn't our fingers and toes would just be little blobs and we wouldn't be able to pick at anything to open it OR GET STICKERS OFF OF STICKER SHEETS. That would be the end of my world if I couldn't have my beloved stickers. </3

Personal Opinion

They are remarkable tools, similar to claws in animals. Some humans who have the genetic flaw of not having fingernails have a remarkably tough time with simple daily activities.

We have toenails to protect your toes from objects being dropped on your feet, and we have finger nails for teh same reason and also to help get a grip on things and handle things better

I was always told that the ends of you fingers and toes are sensitive and exposed so the nails protect them.
