Which is better for me a doctor or psychiatrist?!

Question: Which is better for me a doctor or psychiatrist?
Previous questions I've asked before all answered in result of having anxiety. Lately I feel as if I'm suffocating and ending up gagging as well as being breathless. What's worth seeing the best a doctor or psychiatrist?

Amy, always start with your regular doctor. I think s/he will be able to help you. If not, you'll be referred to the correct specialist.
Psychiatrists do go to school for 4 extra years and are very smart. They come up with medications and other things that other doctors may not think of. Keep that in mind if you don't get relief in the future, but in the meantime, stick with Plan A. ;)

Registered Nurse.

I would start with a medical doctor. U could have some breathing condition, allergy, asthma, etc today everyone is 2 quick 2 assume everything is emotional... first check out the physical... and btw, psychiatrists give medication for anxiety disorders, the ones that do the talk therapy r usually psychologists, psychiatrists usually do the mental/medication issues and work w a counselor... dont just assume that until u check the other stuff out.. good luck and be well

worked w medically and emotionally involved teens

A psychiatrist is a doctor. Jesus, you people.

Your family doctor may be perfect, and might have the solution to your problem on the first try. Worth a shot, always willing to listen, easier to access than a psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist is expert at using the various drugs available, has a greater comfort level for many different anti-anxiety agents (with different durations of action, metabolites, etc) , and likely can tailor a plan with one or more of those, and with other means of managing it (therapy, etc) for better overall progress. Psychiatrists are an unusual group on their own, switching docs is common because they definitely have a jaded perspective on humanity.

in my opinion you should see your Doctor first and to be honest i really don't think you will get to see a psychiatrist unless your Doctor refers you to one.
Anxiety can be treated by pills so you might not need to see a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrist. Doctors tend to try putting you on all these different medications that only make things worse.
