Ambulance Technician Training in the UK?

I want train as a technician, I'm 18, I know I could go to uni and do a paramedical science degree that would get me qualified BUT I can't leave my mum at the moment, I know you used to be able to train on the job, is there anywhere else I can train because everywhere is in England. I live in Swansea, Wales.

** I know that you have to be 21 to be a technician but I will be by the time I am qualified**
