What kind of exercises are good for someone who has back problems?!

Question: What kind of exercises are good for someone who has back problems?
I am a 35 yr old female who has recently lost about 40 lbs. I never thought I'd see a size 8 again. I just stopped eating junk food and bread, stuff like that to lose the weight. I have severe back problems, herniated discs and pinched nerves from a fall on ice years ago, and walking/sitting/standing for long periods of time really aggravates it. Back surgery has been recommended but it scares me as I have heard too many horror stories about it. I really need to tone up but I am afraid of hurting myself and I'm not sure what I could do that will help me firm up and look even better. Does anyone have any experience with back pain themselves? What would you recommend for someone in my situation who wants to exercise but is not sure what to try? I thank you all in advance!

I used to suffer with back pain but i found exercise really helped. Dorsal raises are good, walking in general helps and a few sit ups etc really worked wonders. I hope this helps.

First of all, congratulations on the weight loss. Not an easy accomplishment! Secondly, I wouldn't ask advise on yahoo for ideas to exercise with when dealing with back pain. Best idea would be to talk to your Doctor about a referral to a physiotherapist and have him / her go over a suitable exercise regime with you. Better to be safe than to listen to well meaning people who could end up causing you and your back more grief

Life; and the rocks it throws at you

Swimming is great!.....Cycling, Beginning Pilates, Callanetics

Running is the best exercise.

Please don't look at back surgery so negatively. The surgery itself is quite safe. In September I had a fusion of my cervical spine, I had the 5th and 6th disc fused. I was out of the hospital in two days and was back to work in 2 weeks. I did wear a soft neck brace for one month and still in the process of recovering. The general rule is that when you have medical problems then the longer you wait. The longer it will take you to recover. Now, with your weight lost it is a perfect time to do the surgery. If you do decide to do the surgery, I will walk you through the whole process. Since you have many problems with your back. You should get your exercises for your back from the doctor or a physical therapist. Why do want to spend the rest of your life in pain. Make sure you are seeing an Orthopedic Spine Doctor and not just Family Doctor.
