Severe abdominal pain cuased by narcotics?!

Question:

Severe abdominal pain cuased by narcotics?

I have had injuries and suffered from migraines over the years which have resulted in numerous ED visits over the last twenty years. So I have had the experience of receiving several different narcotics. My 1st experience with this pain that I am inquiring about occured back in the 80's when I took a codeine for a migraine. Within about 20 minutes I began having abdominal pain that eventually was much worse than the migraine. I was hunched over with a spasm, twisting, squeezing type of pain which I ended up going to the ED for. I was also nauseated and very sweaty. At first the ED staff thought I was having a heart attack but that ended up being ruled out. The pain eventually went away over a period of hours when some other narcotic was administered. Nobody was ever able to tell me what the pain was caused from other than I should not take codeine again.
Since then I have had the same reaction to other narcotics (oral AND IV form). They include percocet, dilaudid, fentanyl, darvocet.

I don't have any bowel problems with this pain. It is centered in the mid to right upper quadrants of my abdoman. There is no distention. At times it relieves the pain a bit to press in hard on that area. There is no rebound pain. I am a nurse with years of experience (including ED) and I have never seen this reaction. I do not take any narcotics on a regular basis.
What I also find strange is that I have been able to tolerate some of these meds in the past but eventually developed this reaction. Most recently with dilaudid IV which I was given for a back injury. I recieved several doses two years ago after surgery without any problems. As a matter of fact, I told the ERD physician that it was one of the few narcotics that didn't cause me this reaction. But lo and behold about 20 min. after receiving it the same thing occured. Mind you this pain becomes MUCH worse that the pain that I was given it for.
I do not have any ulcers, liver or pancreas problems. My gallbladder is gone.

I had it taken out laporscopically when I was 25, otherwise no other surgeries in that area.
The closet thing that I have found that makes any sense with the kind of pain I'm having is biliary tract spasms. However, I have not found a link to the narcotics.

In response to some of your answers....this has nothing to do with constipation. My bowels are normal even when this happens.
I've had absolutely no complications since my gallbladder removal almost 20 years age. I mean as far as bowel issues of trouble tolerating foods or chronic abd. pain. This pain has only occured with the narcotic administration.
Thank you Michele, I will check into that website.

Answers:

Hi...........Allot of narcotics can cause sever abdominal pain, in less sever cases, they usually give something for constipation, and or diarrhea. It seems you have a real adversion to any of them. Are you taking these pills with food? Sometime crushing them up in a drink of your choosing will ease the ride through your system. GOOD LUCK................LATER........
