Numbness occurs when the nerve conduction to the affected area of the skin is disrupted. This can occur as a result of certain sleeping postures that put pressure on the nerve that can be mechanically based (e.g. sleeping on the affected area) or chemically based (e.g. inflammation in the area). This disruption can take time to clear up. Numbness can anywhere from seconds to days. If the irritation to the nerve is perpetual or caused nerve damage, the numbness can go on for years or be there indefinitely.

If the numbness is persistent or is getting worse, then I would see your health care professional to rule out any serious causes. Chances are that this is only temporary and will eventually go away on its own with patience (actual nerve damage is not very common). You may try adjusting your sleep posture to avoid future occurrences. If it is a result of inflammation to the area, you may try anti-inflammatory methods (avoid icing a numb area though, as you may cause skin damage).

Hope this helps.
