Do you think my finger is bruised or fractured?!

Question: Do you think my finger is bruised or fractured?
On Thursday, I was playing basketball and my friend(fractured finger on rebound six weeks earlier) let a half court shot go that went flying into my hands three feet away and I immediatly felt compression pain, meaning that when I pushed my middle finger up against something(i know, lol) it REALLY hurt. I had moderate swelling and pretty strong heat when touching my finger.. the swelling continued for 48-60 hours, and the heat has decreased over the four days, moderately. I've got baseball tryouts tomorrow(gonna try to make varsity as a freshman) and although I'm going to play hurt unless it's fractured in four places, I want to know someone's knowlegble guess.. I'm gonna bring it to the Health Center(Nurse) tomorrow to get a better idea..

Thanks, 10 pts to best answer.. lengthy and correct, and importantly no BS about playing!

We cannot know for sure, but it might be a jammed finger. You can probably figure it out yourself based on the symptoms. Pain, swelling, loss of motion, and loss of strength are all very common symptoms of a jammed finger. Swelling within the joint is very obvious, and you can usually tell very easily when you have suffered a finger sprain.

One knuckle will swell up, and it will look noticibly bigger than the others. Unfortunately, this swelling often lasts for weeks if not months. Sometimes it never completely goes away.

Pain and motion usually come back fairly quickly, depending on how severe the sprain is.
