Cut and swollen finger...help!?!

Question: Cut and swollen finger...help!?
Today I was biting my nails (I know, bad habit) but afterwards, I bit part of the nail and ripped it off down to the nailbed. A few seconds later it started to bleed. After applying pressure and putting a bandaid on it, the bleeding stopped. A few minutes later I rinsed it out with cold water. Now, my finger is a little swollen around the nail and hurts if I push down on it. I've put bactine & bandaids on it, but I just want to know if I should continue doing this or if this is a serious problem and to go see a doctor. Someone help??

Cuts on the fingers and hand get infected real easily. Apply triple antibiotic ointment on the band-aid, watch for red streaks going up your arm. If you see this, you need to go to the emergency room ASAP for IV antibiotics. This is a sign of blood poisoning.

My son was a nail biter and he often had swollen cuticles which then got a little pus-y. And very sore. I talked with the doctor once about it and there is something called paronychia (or something like that) and it is simply a bacterial infection around the cuticle, common in nailbiters. It's not that big of a deal, but it does hurt. She had me soak my son's finger in warm (really warm) salt water. Then put an antibiotic cream on it and a bandaid. Don't wear a bandaid all the time- you've got to let air get to the infected area.
I'm not a doctor so it that's not it, I hope I haven't told you anything harmful! If it gets bad, go to the doctor!

I wouldn't call it too serious at the moment!
BUT, if any discharge or anything comes out, it may be infected.
So, then you would need to see a doctor.
But put proxide, and alchol preps on it.
Or maybe ice.
The swelling should go down in the next day.
Hope I helped.
