Would it need stitches?

My two boys were playing around and the 2yo accidentally whacked the 4yo with a toy. He has a little cut on his upper lip, 3/16 of an inch long. It's not bleeding heavily, and it doesn't seem too deep, but it does open pretty wide (about 1/8 of an inch at the widest point). I'm worried that he'd get a worse scar if I treated it at home than if I took him to the ER (urgent cares and doctor's offices are closed at this time). Can I have some educated opinions please? If I call the nurse hotline, they ALWAYS say to come in "to be on the safe side," no matter how minimal the injury is, and that's happened a couple of times that we went in on the nurse's order only to be sent home without treatment.

I've washed the wound and calmed him down, and am waiting for answers. I also know how to prevent and look for infection, and would get him in to see his regular doctor if signs of infection appeared, even if he doesn't see a doctor tonight. Thanks!

I appreciate your answers so far. I should add that the cut is vertical, above the lip, none on the pink part. My gut is telling me butterfly bandage, so I'll wait a bit more for some more answers (or edited answers after my update if anyone checks back :) ), and then either take him in or go buy some butterfly bandages. I agree, I should have them on hand! LOL

I think he should either get stiches or a steryl strip on it.I was on my heelys,& I was going down a hill(BAD IDEA!),& I went 2 fast,so I think I fainted 4 a couple of seconds,& I woke up with ssoo much blood in my mouth,all over my clothes,& all over the middle of the street!I busted my lip open!I had 2 get 6 stiches,but luckily,my dad's a nurse!so he washed it out,w/ water & soap,(ow!)then he put some gauze on it 4 a while 2 clean off the extra blood,then he put on a steryl strip.It worked!But the cut didn't go away 4 bout a week,the steryl strip is waterproof.I got a scrape about 4in. long on my left hand,& I'm left handed,so I couldn't write,I got alot of other cuts 2!& I'm 11yrs old so I cried so loud!!!!It hurt!& my head hit the street real hard 2,so it hurt alot more than my lip!I thought I was going 2 die that day!my vision was very blury,& I was dizzy,I thought I had a concusion!I had 2 eat & drink through a straw,but the straw had 2 be on the left side of my lip,because it got cut badly on the right side.
